Step-by-Step Formulas

1. Theoretical Volume

Board Feet (BF) = (T" × W" × L') ÷ 12

A board foot is a measurement of lumber volume. One board foot is equivalent to 1" thick × 12" wide × 12" long (144 cubic inches). For any board, multiply thickness(in) × width(in) × length(ft) and divide by 12.

2. Total Project Volume

Total BF = BF per piece × Quantity

Sum the board feet for all pieces in your lumber list. Lumber yards often price hardwood species by the board foot rather than a linear foot price.

3. Waste Allowance

Order BF = Total BF × (1 + Waste%)

When purchasing rough-sawn hardwood, allow 15–25% waste for machining, knots, and defects. For dimensional softwood framing, 5–10% is usually sufficient.

Worked Example

Project: 15 pieces of rough-sawn oak, 5/4 thickness (1.25"), 8" wide, 10' long. Add 20% waste.

BF per piece = (1.25 × 8 × 10) ÷ 12 = 8.33 BF
Total BF = 8.33 × 15 = 124.95 BF
Order total (+20% waste) = 124.95 × 1.20 = 149.94 BF

How Lumber Is Actually Priced

Hardwood is sold by volume rather than by the piece, which changes how you compare prices and plan cuts:

  • Volume, Not Length: A board foot is 144 cubic inches, so a wide thick board holds far more of them than a narrow thin one of the same length. This is why hardwood is priced per BF rather than per linear foot.
  • Quarters Describe Thickness: Hardwood thickness is quoted in quarters of an inch: 4/4 is one inch, 8/4 is two. Knowing the convention keeps your calculation aligned with the supplier's pricing.
  • Calculate on Rough Dimensions: You pay for the board as sawn, before planing. Estimating on finished thickness understates the volume you will actually be invoiced for.

Example Calculations

Three scenarios worked through step by step:

Example 1 — Standard Framing Lumber

20 pieces of 2×4, 8 ft long.

BF per piece = (2 × 4 × 8) ÷ 12 = 5.333 BF

Total = 5.333 × 20 = 106.7 BF

Volume = 106.7 ÷ 12 = 8.89 ft³

Result: 106.7 board feet

Example 2 — Hardwood in Quarters

15 pieces of 5/4 oak (1.25 in), 8 in wide, 10 ft long, 20% waste.

BF per piece = (1.25 × 8 × 10) ÷ 12 = 8.333 BF

Total = 8.333 × 15 = 125 BF

With 20% waste = 125 × 1.20 = 150 BF

At $6/BF = $900

Result: order 150 board feet of 5/4 oak

Example 3 — Metric Entry

10 boards, 38 mm thick × 184 mm wide × 2.4 m long.

Thickness = 38 ÷ 25.4 = 1.496 in

Width = 184 ÷ 25.4 = 7.244 in

Length = 2.4 ÷ 0.3048 = 7.874 ft

BF per piece = (1.496 × 7.244 × 7.874) ÷ 12 = 7.11 BF

Total = 71.1 board feet

Buy rough-sawn hardwood a full quarter thicker than your finished dimension. Taking 4/4 stock down to a flat, parallel 3/4 in consumes most of the surplus, and if the board arrives cupped or twisted you will need every bit of it — starting at 5/4 for a 1 in finished part is cheap insurance.

What does 4/4 mean in lumber?
Four quarters of an inch, so nominally 1 in thick rough-sawn. Similarly 5/4 is 1.25 in, 6/4 is 1.5 in, and 8/4 is 2 in. The convention comes from how hardwood is sawn and graded, and is how suppliers quote thickness.
Is a board foot the same as a linear foot?
No. A linear foot measures length only, while a board foot measures volume. A 1×12 and a 1×4 of the same length are the same number of linear feet but the 1×12 is three times the board feet, and costs accordingly.
Should I use nominal or actual dimensions?
For hardwood, use the rough sawn dimensions you are being charged for. For softwood dimensional lumber, a 2×4 actually measures 1.5 × 3.5 in — using nominal 2 × 4 follows industry pricing convention but overstates true volume by about 30%.
How much waste should I allow for hardwood?
Fifteen to twenty-five percent for rough-sawn material, to cover defects, checking at the ends, cupping, and the thickness lost to planing. Pre-surfaced S2S or S4S stock needs less, since much of that loss has already happened.
How many board feet in a 2x4x8?
Exactly 5.33 board feet, using nominal dimensions: (2 × 4 × 8) ÷ 12. If you use the actual 1.5 × 3.5 in size it drops to 3.5 BF, which is why it matters to know which convention a quote is based on.
How do I convert board feet to cubic feet?
Divide by 12, since one board foot is one twelfth of a cubic foot. So 120 board feet is 10 cubic feet, which is about 0.283 cubic metres. This conversion matters for shipping weight and kiln capacity.
