Step-by-Step Formulas

1. Gross Wall Area

Gross Area = Wall Length × Wall Height

Measure the full wall face first. Use consistent units — the same unit system for both dimensions so the area is in m² or ft².

2. Subtract Openings

Net Area = Gross Area − Openings Area

Subtract windows, doors, and any other voids. Only count the face area that actually receives brickwork.

3. Count Bricks Using Module Size

Bricks = Net Area ÷ ( (L + J) × (H + J) ) × Wythes

Bricks are counted using the module face size: brick length + joint and brick height + joint. A double-wythe wall has two layers, roughly doubling the count.

4. Waste Allowance

Order Bricks = ceil(Bricks × (1 + Waste%))

Add 5–10% for a straightforward wall. Allow 10–15% for complex patterns, lots of cuts, corbelling, or tight colour matching.

5. Mortar Volume Estimate

Mortar per brick ≈ Module volume − Brick volume

An approximate mortar volume is estimated from the difference between the brick module size and the actual brick dimensions. Use it for rough ordering only — actual usage varies with joint tooling, cavities, and site conditions.

Worked Example

A 6 m × 2.4 m wall with 1.8 m² of openings. UK standard brick (215 × 65 mm), 10 mm joint, single wythe, 10% waste.

Gross area = 6 × 2.4 = 14.40 m²
Net area = 14.40 − 1.80 = 12.60 m²
Module face = (0.215 + 0.010) × (0.065 + 0.010) = 0.016875 m²
Bricks (exact) = 12.60 ÷ 0.016875 ≈ 747 bricks
Order (10% waste) = ceil(747 × 1.10) = 822 bricks

Why Brick Counts Go Wrong

Brick estimating fails in predictable ways, and almost all of them trace back to the mortar joint:

  • Module Size, Not Brick Size: Counting on the bare brick face ignores the 3/8 in joint around it. A modular brick is 7 5/8 in long but occupies 8 in of wall once laid, so the module — brick plus joint — is what actually divides into your wall area.
  • Openings Subtract Real Money: A single 3 ft × 5 ft window removes about 100 bricks from the count. On a facade with eight openings that is 800 bricks, which is well over a pallet and worth deducting properly.
  • Dye Lot Mismatch on Re-orders: Brick is fired in batches and colour varies measurably between them. Running short means a second order that may not match, leaving a visible band across the wall. Order the full quantity plus waste in one go.

Example Calculations

Three scenarios worked through step by step:

Example 1 — Garden Wall

Wall 30 ft × 6 ft, modular brick 7 5/8 × 2 1/4 in, 3/8 in joint, single wythe, 10% waste.

Module = (7.625 + 0.375) × (2.25 + 0.375) = 8.0 × 2.625 in

Module area = 21.0 in² = 0.1458 ft²

Wall area = 30 × 6 = 180 ft²

Bricks = 180 ÷ 0.1458 = 1,235

With 10% waste = 1,235 × 1.10 = 1,359 bricks

Example 2 — Facade With Openings

Wall 40 ft × 9 ft, two 3 × 5 ft windows, one 3 × 7 ft door, 10% waste.

Gross area = 40 × 9 = 360 ft²

Openings = (2 × 3 × 5) + (3 × 7) = 30 + 21 = 51 ft²

Net area = 360 − 51 = 309 ft²

Bricks = 309 ÷ 0.1458 = 2,119

With 10% waste = 2,331 bricks (about 2.3 pallets)

Example 3 — Double-Wythe Wall

Wall 20 ft × 8 ft, double wythe, 10% waste.

Wall area = 20 × 8 = 160 ft²

Single wythe = 160 ÷ 0.1458 = 1,097 bricks

Double wythe = 1,097 × 2 = 2,194 bricks

With 10% waste = 2,414 bricks

Result: order 2,414 — note the doubled mortar quantity too

Ordering Tip

Order every brick for a single elevation in one delivery, and ask the supplier to pull it all from the same firing run. Brick colour drifts between batches, and a wall finished with a late top-up order often shows a horizontal colour band that no amount of cleaning will disguise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to include mortar joints in the brick size?
Yes. Brick counts are most accurate when using the brick module size (brick dimensions plus mortar joint thickness). The calculator includes joint thickness so estimates match real site layouts.
Should I subtract windows and doors?
Yes. Subtract the total openings area so you only count the face area of brickwork. Keep openings slightly conservative if unsure and rely on the waste allowance for small differences.
How much waste should I allow?
For straightforward walls, 5–10% is common. For complex patterns, lots of cuts, or tight colour matching, 10–15% is safer. Always round up to whole bricks.
What is a wythe in brickwork?
A wythe is a single-brick-thick vertical section of a wall. Single-wythe is one brick; double-wythe is two bricks (common for structural or cavity walls).
How many bricks are in a square foot of wall?
About 6.75 standard modular bricks per square foot of single-wythe wall, using a 7 5/8 × 2 1/4 in brick with 3/8 in joints. Queen and king size bricks run about 5.6 and 4.7 per square foot respectively, so always confirm which size your supplier is quoting.
How many bricks are on a pallet?
Typically 500 for standard modular brick, though it varies by manufacturer and brick size — anywhere from 450 to 535 is common. Since brick is priced per thousand, converting your count to pallets helps you see how close you are to a full-pallet break.
How much mortar do I need for 1,000 bricks?
Roughly 7 to 8 bags of masonry cement plus about a cubic yard of sand for 1,000 standard bricks with 3/8 in joints. Thicker joints, wider units, and double-wythe walls with collar joints all push consumption higher.
What is the difference between nominal and actual brick size?
The nominal size includes the mortar joint and the actual size does not. A modular brick is nominally 8 × 2 2/3 in but actually 7 5/8 × 2 1/4 in — the difference is exactly one 3/8 in joint. Estimating uses the nominal (module) size.
Should I use a 3/8 in or 1/2 in mortar joint?
Three-eighths is the standard for modular brick and is what most coursing is designed around. Half-inch joints appear with some oversized or handmade units. Changing the joint changes the module and therefore the brick count, so set it before you estimate.
How much waste should I allow for brickwork?
Five to ten percent covers a plain rectangular wall. Push to 10–15% where there are many openings to cut around, corners, soldier courses, arches, or a pattern bond that generates half bricks. Breakage in transit also lands inside this allowance.
