Step-by-Step Formulas

1. Material Volume

V = Cross-Section Area × Length

Calculate the volume of the steel profile. For plate, use L × W × T. For round bar, use π × R² × L. For hollow sections like tube or pipe, subtract the inner volume from the outer volume.

2. Density Selection

Typical Density ≈ 7,850 kg/m³

Mild carbon steel has a consistent density, but stainless steels (304/316) and alloyed steels vary slightly. The calculator uses 7,850 kg/m³ (490 lb/ft³) as the default standard.

3. Total Weight

Weight = Volume × Density

Multiplying the calculated volume by the density gives the theoretical weight. Structural engineers use this for load calculations, while suppliers use it for pricing and shipping quotes.

Worked Example

Steel Plate: 2 metres long, 1 metre wide, 10 mm thick. Density 7,850 kg/m³.

Length = 2.0 m
Width = 1.0 m
Thickness = 0.01 m (10 mm)
Volume = 2.0 × 1.0 × 0.01 = 0.02 m³
Weight = 0.02 × 7,850 = 157.0 kg

Example 1 — Steel Plate

Plate 8 ft × 4 ft × 1/2 in, carbon steel at 490 lb/ft³, 4 pieces.

Thickness = 0.5 ÷ 12 = 0.04167 ft

Volume per plate = 8 × 4 × 0.04167 = 1.333 ft³

Weight per plate = 1.333 × 490 = 653.3 lb

Four plates = 653.3 × 4 = 2,613 lb

Result: about 1.31 US tons

Example 2 — Round Bar

2 in diameter round bar, 20 ft long, 10 pieces.

Radius = 1 in = 0.08333 ft

Area = π × 0.08333² = 0.02182 ft²

Volume per bar = 0.02182 × 20 = 0.4363 ft³

Weight per bar = 0.4363 × 490 = 213.8 lb

Ten bars = 2,138 lb

Order plate slightly oversized and cut to final dimension rather than ordering exact sizes. Mill tolerance on thickness alone can swing real weight by a few percent, and plate rarely arrives perfectly square — the trim allowance costs little and saves re-ordering a whole sheet.

What is the density of steel?
Carbon steel is about 7,850 kg/m³ or 490 lb/ft³. Stainless grades run slightly higher at 7,900–8,000 kg/m³, and tool steels vary by alloy content. The differences are small but matter on large tonnages.
How do I calculate round bar weight?
Compute the cross-sectional area as π × radius², multiply by length for volume, then by density. For a 2 in bar that is π × 1² = 3.14 in² of section, which at 20 ft long gives roughly 214 lb in carbon steel.
Is aluminium much lighter than steel?
Yes — about a third the weight at roughly 169 lb/ft³ against 490 for steel. That is why aluminium dominates where weight matters, though it is less stiff, so sections are often made deeper to compensate.
Why does my delivered steel weigh more than calculated?
Mill tolerance. Plate is rolled to a nominal thickness with a permitted variation, and suppliers typically run to the high side of the tolerance band. A 1–3% difference between calculated and weighed tonnage is normal.
How much scrap allowance should I add?
Around five percent for straightforward rectangular cutting, more where the nesting is awkward or parts are irregular. Good nesting software can cut that considerably on production work by fitting parts into offcut areas.
How do I convert between pounds and kilograms?
One kilogram is 2.20462 pounds, so divide pounds by 2.20462 to get kilograms. A US ton is 2,000 lb while a metric tonne is 1,000 kg or 2,204.62 lb — close enough to confuse, far enough apart to matter on a large order.
