Understanding Decathlon Scoring

The decathlon asks a question no single event can answer: how do you compare a 10.5-second 100 metres with a 50-metre discus throw? The scoring tables resolve it by converting every performance onto a common points scale, calibrated so that broadly equivalent standards earn broadly equal points.

Each event carries three coefficients — A, B and C — fitted so that roughly 1000 points represents a strong international performance. Because the C exponent exceeds 1, the scale is progressive: gains made from an already-high mark are worth more than the same improvement from a weak one, which rewards genuine excellence over uniform competence.

Decathlon Scoring Formulas

Two formula shapes cover all ten events, differing only in which direction counts as better:

1. Running Events

For the 100m, 400m, 110m hurdles and 1500m a lower time is better, so time is subtracted from B:

Points = INT(A × (B − Time in seconds)^C)

2. Jumping Events

Long jump, high jump and pole vault are scored in centimetres:

Points = INT(A × (Measurement in cm − B)^C)

3. Throwing Events

Shot put, discus and javelin use the same shape but measure in metres:

Points = INT(A × (Distance in metres − B)^C)

4. Total Score

INT() truncates rather than rounds, which is the official convention:

Total = Σ Points from all 10 events
963.89 → 963 points, not 964

Official Scoring Coefficients

Javelin Throw 2 10.14 7 1.08 77.19 m
1500 metres 2 0.03768 480 1.85 3:53.80

How the Scoring Shapes Strategy

The mathematics of the tables directly influences how decathletes train and compete:

  • Balance Beats Brilliance: Mayer's world record contained no single event above 1051 points, yet totalled 9126 through consistency. A specialist scoring 1200 in one event but 500 in three others finishes far behind.
  • The 1500m Is the Great Leveller: Run last, after nine events across two days, it punishes the heavily-built throwers. Even in his record Mayer managed only 705 points there — his lowest score of the competition.
  • A No-Height Ends It: Failing to clear the opening bar in the pole vault scores zero, wiping out 800 to 1000 points instantly. This is why decathletes enter well below their personal best and why the vault is the event most feared in the competition.

Decathlon Score Bands

Indicative total-score ranges and the standard each represents:

Total Points Level Context

Example Calculations

Here are three decathlons scored step-by-step:

Example Scenario 1 — Strong Performance

10.90s · 7.30m · 14.50m · 1.98m · 49.50s · 14.40s · 44.00m · 4.90m · 60.00m · 4:35.00.

100m 10.90s → 883 · Long Jump 7.30m → 886 · Shot Put 14.50m → 759

High Jump 1.98m → 785 · 400m 49.50s → 838

Day 1 subtotal = 4,151 points

110m H 14.40s → 924 · Discus 44.00m → 746 · Pole Vault 4.90m → 880

Javelin 60.00m → 738 · 1500m 4:35.00 → 712

Day 2 subtotal = 4,000 points

Total = 4,151 + 4,000 = 8,151 points

Result: 8,151 — elite standard, past the 8000-point milestone

Example Scenario 2 — Elite Level (World Record)

Kevin Mayer, Talence 2018: 10.55s · 7.80m · 16.00m · 2.05m · 48.42s · 13.75s · 50.54m · 5.45m · 71.90m · 4:36.11.

100m 10.55s → 963 · Long Jump 7.80m → 1010 · Shot Put 16.00m → 851

High Jump 2.05m → 850 · 400m 48.42s → 889

Day 1 subtotal = 4,563 points

110m H 13.75s → 1007 · Discus 50.54m → 882 · Pole Vault 5.45m → 1051

Javelin 71.90m → 918 · 1500m 4:36.11 → 705

Day 2 subtotal = 4,563 points — identical to day 1

Total = 9,126 points — the current world record

Example Scenario 3 — Average Competition

11.50s · 6.55m · 12.20m · 1.82m · 52.00s · 15.70s · 37.00m · 4.10m · 49.00m · 4:48.00.

100m 11.50s → 753 · Long Jump 6.55m → 709 · Shot Put 12.20m → 619

High Jump 1.82m → 644 · 400m 52.00s → 725

Day 1 subtotal = 3,450 points

110m H 15.70s → 767 · Discus 37.00m → 604 · Pole Vault 4.10m → 645

Javelin 49.00m → 574 · 1500m 4:48.00 → 631

Day 2 subtotal = 3,221 points

Total = 6,671 points — national standard, weakest event javelin at 574

Units and Truncation Tip

Two details catch out hand calculations. The three jumps are scored in centimetres, not metres — a 7.80m long jump enters the formula as 780, so using 7.80 produces a wildly wrong answer. And INT() truncates rather than rounds: a raw 963.89 in the 100 metres scores 963, not 964. Across ten events, applying normal rounding inflates a total by several points, which is enough to change a championship placing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are decathlon points calculated?
Each event uses three official coefficients. Track events score INT(A × (B − Time)^C) because a lower time is better, while jumps and throws score INT(A × (Performance − B)^C) because a higher mark is better. The ten event scores are then summed for the total.
What are the ten decathlon events in order?
Day one is the 100 metres, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400 metres. Day two is the 110 metres hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500 metres. This order is fixed by World Athletics rules and is always contested over two consecutive days.
What is the decathlon world record?
9126 points, set by Kevin Mayer of France at Talence in 2018. His day one and day two totals were identical at 4563 points each. Ashton Eaton held the previous record at 9045, set in Beijing in 2015.
What performance scores 1000 points in each event?
Roughly 10.40s for the 100m, 7.76m long jump, 18.39m shot put, 2.21m high jump, 46.17s for 400m, 13.81s in the hurdles, 56.16m discus, 5.29m pole vault, 77.19m javelin and 3:53.80 for 1500m. These are deliberately calibrated as comparable standards across very different disciplines.
What is a good decathlon score?
Around 5500 to 6500 is solid club level and 6500 to 7500 is national standard. Above 7500 becomes internationally competitive, 8000 points is a recognised career milestone, and 8500 or more is genuine medal territory at global championships.
Why are points truncated instead of rounded?
The official rules specify INT(), which discards the fractional part. A raw score of 963.89 in the 100 metres becomes 963 points, not 964. Applying normal rounding across ten events would inflate a total by several points.
How does the decathlon differ from the heptathlon?
The decathlon has ten events over two days and is contested by men; the heptathlon has seven and is contested by women. Both use the same formula structure but entirely different coefficients, so the two scoring tables are not interchangeable and totals are not directly comparable.
Which decathlon event is hardest to score well in?
The 1500 metres is notoriously punishing, coming last after nine exhausting events — even Mayer scored only 705 there in his world record. The throws also tend to score lower for athletes built for speed, which is why decathletes are usually judged on their weakest events.
What happens if an athlete fails to record a mark?
That event scores zero. Three fouls in a throw, or failing to clear the opening height in the pole vault or high jump, typically costs 700 to 900 points and effectively ends any challenge. This is why decathletes open conservatively rather than chasing big marks.
Can I enter the 1500m as minutes and seconds?
Yes. The 1500 metres accepts either minutes:seconds format such as 4:36.11 or plain seconds such as 276.11 — whichever form your result sheet uses. All other track events are entered in seconds.

Assumptions & Reference Values

This tool returns estimates using standard financial formulas and the default parameters shown in the calculator inputs. Always consult a qualified financial advisor before making investment decisions.

Calculator Defaults:

  • Running events (100m, 400m, 110m hurdles, 1500m): Points = INT(A × (B − Time)^C), since a lower time is better.
  • Jumping events (long jump, high jump, pole vault): Points = INT(A × (Measurement in cm − B)^C) — jumps are scored in CENTIMETRES, not metres.
  • Throwing events (shot put, discus, javelin): Points = INT(A × (Distance in metres − B)^C).
  • Official World Athletics coefficients — 100m: 25.4347 / 18 / 1.81; Long Jump: 0.14354 / 220 / 1.40; Shot Put: 51.39 / 1.5 / 1.05; High Jump: 0.8465 / 75 / 1.42; 400m: 1.53775 / 82 / 1.81; 110m H: 5.74352 / 28.5 / 1.92; Discus: 12.91 / 4 / 1.10; Pole Vault: 0.2797 / 100 / 1.35; Javelin: 10.14 / 7 / 1.08; 1500m: 0.03768 / 480 / 1.85.
  • INT() TRUNCATES rather than rounds: a raw score of 963.89 gives 963 points, not 964.
  • Performances at or beyond the threshold B score zero points, never a negative value.
  • Verified against real results: Kevin Mayer’s 2018 world record (9126) and Ashton Eaton’s Beijing 2015 score (9045) both reproduce exactly.
  • Day 1 comprises the 100m, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400m; day 2 the 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500m.
  • The 1500m accepts minutes:seconds (4:36.11) or plain seconds (276.11); all other track events are entered in seconds.
  • Score bands (developing under 5500 through all-time great above 9000) are indicative guidelines, not official classifications.
