The Ages & Stages Questionnaires (ASQ) system is a gold-standard screening program used by pediatricians, educators, and developmental specialists to monitor developmental progress in early childhood. Because infants grow and acquire skills rapidly, selecting the correct questionnaire for the child's exact biological age is essential.
For children who were born prematurely (before 37 weeks gestation), comparing them directly to full-term peers would result in inaccurate developmental assessments. To account for this, clinicians use Corrected Age (also known as adjusted age). This correction is applied up until the child reaches 24 months of chronological age, after which milestone expectations converge and standard chronological age is used.

How ASQ Adjusted Scores Compensate for Omitted Items
In a standard ASQ-3 questionnaire, each of the five developmental categories contains exactly 6 questions. Parents answer each question with "Yes" (10 points), "Sometimes" (5 points), or "Not Yet" (0 points).
If a parent omits (leaves blank) 1 or 2 items in a category, you should calculate an adjusted score so the category score remains comparable to the standard cutoff.
The ASQ-3 Adjusted Score Formula:
Adjusted Score = (Total Score Obtained / Number of Completed Items) × 6
Note: If more than 2 items are omitted in a single domain, that domain is invalid and cannot be scored.
