What are river rocks?
River rocks are rounded stones found in streambeds and natural water channels. Years of water movement smooth the edges and create a variety of colors and textures. They’re commonly used for decorative beds, drainage layers, erosion control, and as ground cover.
How much river rock do you need?
The amount depends on the area you want to cover and the depth you plan to install. Measure your area, pick a finished depth, and add a waste allowance for irregular subgrade and spillage.
Different types of river rocks
River rock and decorative gravel densities vary by rock type and gradation. Use the table below as a reference, then confirm with your supplier for best accuracy.

How to use our river rock calculator
- Select a rock type (or Custom) to set density.
- Choose “How much river rock do I need?” to estimate volume/weight from area and depth.
- Or choose “How much area can I cover?” to estimate coverage from a known volume or weight.
- Enter depth and waste allowance, then optionally add a unit price in USD for cost.
How do you calculate river rock volume and weight?
The core calculation is volume from area and depth, then weight from density.
1. Select a river rock type (density)
Different river rocks and gravels have different densities. The calculator uses density to convert volume to weight (and vice versa). If your supplier provides a density, select Custom and enter it.
2. Calculate volume needed
Multiply the area to cover (A) by the depth (d), then add a waste allowance (c) for spillage, uneven subgrade, and minor measurement errors.
3. Convert volume to weight
Multiply the required volume by the selected density to estimate the total weight. Many suppliers sell decorative rock by the ton/tonne.
4. Coverage calculator (optional)
If you already have a known volume or weight of river rock, the calculator can estimate how much area it will cover at your chosen depth (after waste).
5. Cost estimate (optional)
Enter a unit price (USD) per yard/metre or per ton/tonne to estimate total project cost. Pricing varies by region, size, color, and delivery fees.
Sample calculation of the amount of needed river rock
Example: A walkway 0.8 m wide and 10 m long, depth 7.5 cm, pea gravel density 1,788 kg/m³, and 5% waste.
V = (A × d) × (1 + c) = (8.0 × 0.075) × 1.05 = 0.63 m³
W = V × ρ = 0.63 × 1,788 = 1,126.44 kg
Decorative Stone Coverage
River rock is bought for looks but behaves like any other aggregate once it is on the ground:
- Depth Sets Coverage: Two inches suits pure ground cover, three to four inches is needed to suppress weeds and handle drainage. Depth is the single biggest driver of how many tons you buy.
- Cost Scales With Tonnage: Priced per ton, so the volume-to-weight conversion directly determines the bill. Getting the density right keeps the budget honest.
- Rounded Stone Migrates on Slopes: River rock is smooth and does not interlock, so on anything steeper than about 3:1 it gradually creeps downhill and needs edging or a coarser angular product instead.
Benefits of Using This Calculator
Example Calculations
Three scenarios worked through step by step:
Example 1 — Landscape Bed
Bed 30 ft × 6 ft at 3 in deep, 1,600 kg/m³, 10% waste.
Area = 180 ft²; depth = 0.25 ft
Volume = 180 × 0.25 = 45 ft³ = 1.67 yd³
With 10% waste = 1.83 yd³ = 49.5 ft³
Density ≈ 100 lb/ft³; weight = 4,950 lb = 2.48 tons
At $75/ton = $186
Example 2 — Dry Creek Bed
Feature 40 ft × 4 ft at 4 in deep, 10% waste.
Area = 160 ft²; depth = 0.333 ft
Volume = 160 × 0.333 = 53.3 ft³ = 1.97 yd³
With 10% waste = 2.17 yd³ = 58.6 ft³
Weight = 58.6 × 100 = 5,860 lb = 2.93 tons
Result: about 3 tons
Example 3 — Coverage From Tonnage
You have 5 tons available; how much area at 2 in deep?
Weight = 5 × 2,000 = 10,000 lb
Volume = 10,000 ÷ 100 = 100 ft³
Depth = 2 ÷ 12 = 0.1667 ft
Area = 100 ÷ 0.1667 = 600 ft²
Result: 5 tons covers about 600 ft² at 2 in
Landscaping Tip
Landscaping Tip
Install a solid edge — steel, aluminium, or a paver border — around every river rock bed before the stone arrives. Rounded stone will not stay where you put it: without a physical restraint it spreads into lawns and paths, and you spend every spring raking it back.
FAQs
- How much river rock do I need?
- Measure the area you want to cover, choose a depth, and multiply area × depth to get volume. Then add a waste allowance. Multiply volume by rock density to estimate weight.
- What depth should river rock be?
- For decorative beds, 5–10 cm (2–4 in) is common depending on rock size. For drainage layers or heavier use, deeper sections may be required. Match depth to rock diameter and intended use.
- Do I buy river rock by the yard or by the ton?
- Both are common. Some suppliers sell by cubic yard/metre, others by ton/tonne. Use density to convert between volume and weight, and confirm units with your supplier.
- How much does a yard of river rock cost?
- Costs vary by region and rock type, but a cubic yard of river rock is commonly priced in the low hundreds of USD. Delivery, color, and sizing can significantly change the price.
- How much area does a ton of river rock cover?
- Roughly 120 square feet at 2 inches deep, 80 ft² at 3 inches, or 60 ft² at 4 inches, assuming about 100 lb/ft³. Larger stone sizes have more void space and cover slightly more area per ton.
- How deep should river rock be?
- Two inches is enough for purely decorative ground cover over fabric. Three to four inches is needed to suppress weeds effectively, and drainage applications such as dry creek beds usually want at least four.
- Do I need landscape fabric under river rock?
- Strongly recommended. Fabric stops the stone sinking into soil and slows weed growth substantially. Without it you lose visible depth within a couple of seasons and end up topping the bed up.
- What size river rock should I use?
- One to two inch stone for general beds and pathways, two to four inch for dry creek beds and larger features, and pea gravel around half an inch where you want a walkable surface. Larger stone reads better over larger areas.
- Is river rock better than mulch?
- It lasts indefinitely and never needs replacing, but it holds heat, is hard to remove once installed, and adds no nutrients to the soil. Mulch decomposes and must be topped up but improves soil and suits planted beds better.
- How much does river rock cost?
- Commonly $50 to $150 per ton delivered, varying widely by stone type, size, colour, and haul distance. Bagged rock from a garden centre costs several times more per ton and only makes sense for very small quantities.
