Step-by-Step Formulas
1. Paved Area
Measure the paved footprint. Use length × width for driveways and parking lots. For round pads, enter the diameter. If you already have area from plans, use Custom area.
2. Compacted Volume
Asphalt is specified and placed at its finished (compacted) thickness. A standard residential driveway surface lift is typically 50–75 mm (2–3 in). Multiply area by compacted depth to get compacted volume.
3. Waste Allowance
Waste covers edge trimming, tie-ins at kerbs, handwork around drains/manholes, and small measurement errors. 5–10% is a common range. Use 10–15% for irregular shapes or tight access.
4. Convert to Tonnage
Hot mix asphalt (HMA) is ordered by tons/tonnes. Typical density is 2,300–2,400 kg/m³ (143–150 lb/ft³). Always confirm with your supplier, as mix designs vary.

Tonnage, Thickness and Compaction
Asphalt is ordered by the ton and placed by the inch, with compaction sitting between the two:
- Density Converts to Tons: Hot mix runs around 145 lb/ft³ compacted. Multiplying your compacted volume by that density is what turns a measured area into a plant order.
- Compacted Thickness Is the Spec: Drawings and codes state compacted depth. Loose mix is laid roughly 20–25% thicker and rolled down, so the paver setting and the spec figure are not the same number.
- The Base Decides the Lifespan: Asphalt is a flexible surface that spreads load into what is below. Over a weak or poorly drained base, even a thick mat cracks and potholes within a few seasons.

Example 1 — Residential Driveway
Driveway 50 ft × 12 ft at 3 in compacted, 145 lb/ft³, 7.5% waste.
Area = 50 × 12 = 600 ft²; depth = 0.25 ft
Volume = 600 × 0.25 = 150 ft³
Weight = 150 × 145 = 21,750 lb = 10.88 tons
With 7.5% waste = 11.69 tons
Result: order about 11.7 tons of hot mix
Example 2 — Parking Area Overlay
Lot 80 ft × 60 ft at 2 in overlay, 145 lb/ft³, 7.5% waste.
Area = 4,800 ft²; depth = 0.1667 ft
Volume = 4,800 × 0.1667 = 800 ft³
Weight = 800 × 145 = 116,000 lb = 58 tons
With 7.5% waste = 62.35 tons
Result: about 62 tons for the overlay

Pave and compact in a single continuous operation while the mix is above about 185°F. Hot mix that cools below that will not densify properly no matter how many passes the roller makes, and under-compacted asphalt is permanently porous — water gets in, freezes, and the surface ravels within a couple of winters.

- Multiply area in square feet by compacted thickness in feet to get cubic feet, then multiply by about 145 lb/ft³ and divide by 2,000. A 600 ft² driveway at 3 inches works out near 11 tons before waste.
- How thick should an asphalt driveway be?
- Two to three inches of surface course over a properly compacted 6–8 in aggregate base for residential use. Commercial and truck-trafficked areas need 3–4 inches of asphalt, often in two lifts, over a deeper base.
- How much does a ton of asphalt cover?
- About 80 square feet at 2 inches compacted, or roughly 55 ft² at 3 inches, using standard hot-mix density. Coverage falls proportionally as thickness increases.
- What is the difference between hot mix and cold patch?
- Hot mix is produced at high temperature at a plant, placed by a paver, and compacted while hot — it is the permanent product. Cold patch is a workable-at-ambient material intended for temporary pothole repair, not for paving areas.
- Can asphalt be laid in cold weather?
- It is much harder below about 50°F, because the mix cools before it can be compacted. Most contractors stop paving in late autumn for exactly this reason; a mat laid too cold never reaches target density.
- How long before I can drive on new asphalt?
- Light vehicles after 24 to 72 hours once it has cooled and hardened. Full curing takes several months, during which hot weather can leave it soft — avoid parking with the wheels turned or using jack stands in the first season.
